With Ben getting glasses, it brought to memory a story that Malcolm told me about his childhood:
He was about 8 years old, and had to go for a routine eye examination. His elder brother had glasses and Malcolm decided that he really wanted some too! So he kept giving wrong answers to all the optometrist's questions. The optometrist kept checking and rechecking, and each time Malcolm would give another answer. Eventually the flustered optometrist suggested that Malcolm's mother take him for a walk and give him some food and bring him back later that afternoon.
She duly did this, and was all worried about her son. When they went back, Malcolm just continued giving wrong answers - desperate to get glasses like his big brother. The optometrist at last managed to find out that there wasn't any need for glasses and could end the ordeal! Malcolm had to go home without glasses, much to his disappointment!
What he didn't know, was that the optometrist could tell that he'd need glasses later in life, and had he only told that to Malcolm then, he'd happily have given the right answers!!
He only admitted what he'd done to his mother years later...
Little boys!!!!
