You may want to read the first part of this post, as it has been a while...
After the warthog had been totally disemboweled, and the guide had explained the various organs and their functions, the children took the carcass to a nearby hook, hung it up, and were given a lesson in skinning it!!
Unfortunately I have no photos of this event, as Jordan needed attention at the chalet. A pity!
That afternoon the children had free time and they had some epic battle going on between the boys and the girls (friendly, of course). I don't really know what started it, or what was actually the aim, but it involved a lot of stalking in the bush, and taking of hostages. Daniel told me that the boys won!!
Then they had to prepare for the bush sleepout! Malcolm and I didn't join in as we had the two little ones to look after, but we joined the group for supper.
The campout took place out in the bush on the reserve, right next to a water-hole!! There were hippos in that water-hole! It was a bit scary to leave our kids there for the night. The guide also told them not to put the sleeping bags out yet, as scorpions might get inside them.... What a lovely thought!! They were briefed on bush-etiquette (like where to go to the toilet...), not to wander off, not to go anywhere alone etc. They arranged themselves into watches for the night. The 5 adults who slept out with them were given mattresses, but the kids slept on just a tarpaulin! They all complained the next morning about sore hips and shoulders!
The bush is incredibly dry right now, spring rains are a bit late. You can see it in these photos:
Hi Felicity~ I love to see your pictures, too! =) Glad they survived their night in the bush - wow.
ReplyDeleteI have found that whenever my atlas is out of place (top bone in spine), I do get a migraine... so it's my indicator of needing an adjustment ASAP. Unfortunately it's gone out way too much lately ~ monthly and more! My muscles must be weak? It's just too easily provoked. But I'm SO thankful when the pain at least subsides (as right now)... It's never gone back into place on its own tho, so I will be glad to get it fixed this week. Just a crazy busy week for that -- I wish I lived much closer to his office since driving is one of my aggravations.
Sorry for the long comment that could have been more appropriate in a private email ;-)
Hope you are having a great week ~♥~
Hello friend ~ I have an award to share with you! Please stop by and pick it up =)

What a fun and memorable time for your kids!
ReplyDeleteI confess that my stereotype is Africa = hot, so the pics of the sleepout looking rather chilly surprised me!
LOL! Julie, despite our ideas of chilly/cold probably being very different, it can get cold at night in the bush. The chilly dawn you see here turned into a 30+C day!
