One of Those 'Broken Telephone' Moments

Sometimes I wonder just how good I am for my kids!  Like today:

Ben, who is 9, woke up this morning with an idea for a story in his head.  He quickly decided that he is going to write a book!  He bounced quite a few ideas off me for adventures that his heroes would have... (Pretty much all morning long!)
Luckily I found a notebook lying around the house, waiting to have some purpose in life, which will do very well for our budding author.  He immediately sat down to design and draw the cover, and start writing the 'Intro's' on his characters.
It's very much a Boy Story - you know, lots of fighting and troubles and hectic adventures and probably blood and gore....
The biggest problem for me is my role in the whole thing.  It too easily becomes a case of "Why don't I just tell you the story, Mom, and you write it down for me?"
Which I don't want to do.
So I was careful to ensure that Ben knows just who is going to do all the writing!

The other problem is that he asks how to spell words all the time.  Which is a good thing really, I appreciate the fact that he cares about it!  But it also leaves me pulling at my hair, and wondering what happened to all the spelling lessons we did during this year??   Shouldn't he know by now that Q is always followed by U?

Ben was writing at the dinner table, and I was in the kitchen, when he called to me, "How do you spell 'once' ....W...?"
"No," I answered, "O..N..C..E."
"Isn't it W...A..."
"NO!  It's O..N..C..E!"
He carried on writing, and later brought me the 'Intro' on the first character to read:

"Andy is a quiet guy who just once a quiet life"......

Umm... OOPS!!

  1. Hi Friend,
Ohhhhh it's so wonderful to know that I'm not alone! Great entry! Made me laugh, only because I can SO SO SO relate! I often find myself saying, "Is my name Webster?" To which I hear, "No Mom..." as my lovely children search for the BIG RED Webster Dictionary! Hugs, EMichelle

  3. I have to agree with the first comment ... it is glorious to know that I am not the only one who has days (weeks) like this! Perhaps there are good lessons for our kids hidden in our mistakes!

  6. That's so cute. It's wonderful he wants to write. I'm sorry about your migraines and hope you're better soon, too. My hubby gets them and they're awful. Worse than fibromyalgia, I think. Thanks for all your kind posts on my blog. I'm so behind on commenting. I take amitriptylene (sp?) to help me sleep and gabapentin for pain. It's a neuropothy medication, actually. (Forgive my spelling LOL!)
And I loved your comment on my discovering things post. Sounds like we have a lot in common. If you're ever in the States, look me up!
A Merry Christmas to you and all of yours.
